In addition to frequent vacuuming, it’s important to clean your carpet on a regular basis. Cleaning systems will remove the oily, sticky soil that vacuums can’t take out, and will help keep your carpet looking great over time.

Cleaning systems target the soils that result from cooking vapors, air pollution, and tracked-in dirt. The particles of oily soil deposited on carpet fibers can cause gradual but significant dulling of colors. The color isn’t lost, but is hidden under the film. If this type of soil is allowed to accumulate, it begins to attract and hold the dry soil.
Importance of a cleaning schedule

If the carpet is cleaned before it becomes too unsightly, the cleaning chore will be easier and more successful. Carpet in a typical household should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months, depending on the number of residents and amount of activity.

Choosing the proper cleaning system is important. Some systems may leave residues which accelerate re-soiling and defeats the whole purpose of cleaning.

Shaw’s choice: Hot water extraction

Research indicates that the hot water extraction system provides the best capability for cleaning. This system is commonly referred to as “steam cleaning,” although no steam is actually generated. The process consists of applying a cleaning agent into the carpet pile and using water in the extractor to recover the used solution and soil. This can be done from a truck-mounted unit outside the home with only the hose and wand brought inside or by a portable system brought into the home.

Shaw warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning by hot water extraction (commonly called “steam” cleaning) by a professional cleaning service or do-it-yourself system, using equipment that is certified under the Carpet and Rug Institute’s Seal of Approval program. We strongly recommend cleaning systems that have achieved the Gold Level Performance in the CRI Seal of Approval Program.

Professional advantages

Professional carpet cleaners are a great choice for your floor. Their cleaning equipment has more extraction power than the rental units available to individuals, and the carpet should dry more quickly. True professionals also understand the equipment, know the proper cleaning agents for the situation at hand, and recognize the differences in fibers and carpet construction.

Locate a professional carpet cleaner

Effective January 1, 2008, professional service must be performed by an IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) certified firm. Call and explain that you have purchased a Shaw carpet, and be sure to ask for a cleaner near you who uses the hot water extraction system. If you prefer tackling the job yourself, check these do-it-yourself guidelines before you begin.

How do I take care of my carpet?

New carpet is a major investment that adds significantly to the quality, beauty, comfort and warmth of your home. Proper care and maintenance not only protects your carpet, it gives added value to your carpet investment by providing you with many years of use. Proper care includes routine vacuuming, fast and effective spot cleaning, and regular professional cleaning using the hot water extraction method. What is required? The functional role of a carpet is influenced by carpet construction, fiber characteristics, color selection, installation, traffic load, soiling, and care and maintenance considerations. To assure you enjoy all the benefits your Beaulieu carpet is intended to provide you throughout its lifetime, and to help promote a healthy indoor environment, Beaulieu requires the use of carpet care products that are certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute’s (CRI) Seal of Approval (SOA) Program. Spot cleaners, pre-sprays, in-tank solutions and extractors that are SOA certified have demonstrated a high level of carpet cleaning performance. Information on these products can be obtained at

Claims for staining and soiling will not be considered if a carpet has not been cleaned following the guidelines listed here, and maintained using products that carry the CRI SOA certification. Your carpet must also be professionally cleaned every twelve (12) to eighteen (18) months to maintain your warranty.

A receipt of professional hot water extraction cleanings is required to show proof of this service.

Carpet Care and Guidelines for Triexta Fiber

1) Preventive Maintenance

  • Use of mats or runners at all home entrances and on uncarpeted areas adjacent to carpet will reduce soil and moisture in traffic areas. Clean mats and any other rugs placed over carpet regularly.
  • Mohawk recommends using furniture coasters to distribute the weight of heavy items, especially on furniture with wheels. Use a protective barrier between the wheels and the carpet.

2) Regular vacuuming most dirt, and even dust, takes the form of hard particles. When left in the carpet, these gritty, sharp particles abrade the pile of the carpet. Regular vacuuming not only prolongs the life of the carpet but will enhance its appearance as well. Most soiling in carpet is of the dry particle type which can be removed with a vacuum cleaner.

  • Vacuum high-traffic areas daily, medium- to-high traffic areas twice weekly, and the entire house at least once a week.
  • Use a vacuum with a rotating brush or beater bar. Change the bags often and check the beater bars for burs and gouges to prevent damage to the surface of the carpet. However, please note that carpet with thick loop pile, frieze and shag/cabled construction may become fuzzy or worn with use of a beater bar vacuum; Mohawk recommends the use of a suction-only vacuum for these carpet constructions.

Cleaning Recommendations

  • Even with regular vacuuming, soil particles and oily dirt will cling to carpet fibers. Foot traffic drives these particles and dirt deep into the carpet. Mohawk recommends professional hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months using cleaning products, equipment or systems that carry the Carpet and Rug Institute Seal of Approval. (Visit for a complete list of certified products.) Periodic cleaning by a certified carpet care professional using the standard hot water extraction method (140 degrees) will refresh carpet appearance. Mohawk recommends the use of a certified carpet care professional that adheres to the IICRC S100 Standard Reference Guide for Professional Cleaning. For a list of professionals in your area visit

It affects the image of your home

Face it, would you prefer to go to someone’s home that is dirty and poorly cared for or one that is clean and well maintained?

Warmth of home

Do you want to stand on a cold hard surface floor where the cold slowly saps away the warmth in your feet? Carpeted floors act as a barrier to that cold.

Body ergonomics

Have you ever had to stand on a hard surface all day? It’s hard on your feet, your knees, your back, etc. and can cause all kinds of medical issues for you over the long term.

Sound deadening

You’ve been in homes where you’ve heard people ‘clopping’ across various hard surface floor surfaces and know how disturbing that can be.

Indoor Air Quality and Carpet Cleaning

When you ask a group of people the question of whether indoor air quality would be better in a home with hard surface floors verses a home with carpeted floors, they will invariably respond that the indoor air quality would be better in the home with hard surface floors. Surprisingly, that is the wrong answer though. Shaw Industries found that indoor air quality was better in homes with carpeted floors than ones with hardwood floors. As a matter of fact, they said “Prior to cleaning, the levels of airborne allergens, such as cat and dust mite allergens, were less for all of the carpets than the hardwood flooring, even after the carpet was repeatedly disturbed.”

It is aesthetically pleasing to your family

All of the above things contribute to a warm, creative, healthy and comforting environment for your family. They need to feel good about where they live.

Now that you understand the value of maintaining your carpet on a regular basis because you have invested in your carpeting for all of the above reasons, don’t waste your investment by failing to maintain your carpeting! Your carpet needs to be properly maintained regularly!

There are four important steps in maintaining your carpet:
1. Preventing soil from entering the building with proper walk off matting systems.
2. Regular vacuuming, with entrances and heavily traveled areas receiving more frequent vacuuming.
3. Interim cleaning using low moisture cleaning
4. Restorative cleaning of heavily traveled areas using hot water extraction

notice Manufacturers cleaning requirments as of january 1, 2007

Shaw, Mohawk, Beaulieu, Blue Ridge and Tai Ping Options have all announced that they will tie warranties on carpet sold as of Jan. 1, 2007 to the Carpet & Rug Institute’s (CRI) Seal of Approval (SOA) program for cleaning products and equipment.

Carpet Manufacturer Warranty Requirements

Cleaning Requirements

An often overlooked and unknown issue today is the mandatory cleaning requirements fiber and floor covering manufacturers have placed on their warranties for their products.

Starting January 1, 2008, the three largest carpet manufacturers, Shaw, Mohawk, and Beaulieu, began to require that their carpets be cleaned by IICRC Certified Technicians to maintain the warranty.  As a result, be sure to look at the warranty requirements on your floor and fiber products to be sure that you are following their mandatory cleaning requirements.  If you do not follow them, you will void the warranty on your new carpet.  Here are cleaning requirements from the three largest carpet manufacturers in the United States.

Today, the three largest manufacturers of carpet, Shaw, Mohawk, and Beaulieu, require the buyer of new residential carpet to have it cleaned every 12-24 months by an IICRC certified technician or you void the warranty.  Mohawk has taken it a step further and requires that it be cleaned by an IICRC certified firm using the hot water extraction cleaning method.  There are a lot of people who are voiding the warranties on their carpet and don’t know it.  Don’t lose your warranty!

Mohawk – “requires professional hot water cleaning every 18 months using cleaning products, equipment, or systems that carry the Carpet Rug Institute Seal of Approval.”

Shaw – “Professional service must be performed by an IICRC Certified Firm.  Shaw warranties require that the homeowner be able to show proof of periodic cleaning by and IICRC certified cleaning professional.”

Beaulieu –“Select a service that uses the deep extraction method; vacuuming, pre-spray, agitation, rinse and hot water extraction.”
